VETERANS COURT

Would you like to have your case heard at Veterans Court?
  • Tell your Public Defender  or Private Attorney that you are a Veteran or Active Duty, Guard or Reserve.
  • Say that you would like to have your case reviewed to see if your charges are eligible for Veterans Court
  • You can ask to have your case calendared at Veterans Court in Courtroom 37 on Thursday at 2pm.
  • You would ask the Judge to do this at your arraignment.
  • Your arraignment is when you are scheduled to appear again in Court to hear the charges filed against you.

​VETERANS COURT QUALIFICATIONS
You may be eligible for Veterans Court if you have served in the United States military and have a link between your military service and your criminal charges.

The Vet Court team will conduct an assessment with you on your first day at Vet Court. You will be asked to return in one to two weeks at which time a decision will be made as to your eligibility and suitability for Veterans Court.

If you are eligible for Veterans Court and choose to participate in the program you must:
  • Plead guilty to your charges
  • You will be required to attend treatment
  • You will be in Veterans Court a minimum of 12 months.
  • You will have multiple court appearances 
  • Treatment may consist of outpatient treatment,  intensive outpatient treatment or a residential treatment program.
  • In addition, you will need to complete any court ordered DUI classes and/or Domestic Violence Classes.
  • You will be placed on formal probation
  • You must reside in Ventura County  
  • You must pay any victim restitution owed
  • You must successfully complete the Veterans Court program in order to be eligible for the benefits of Veterans Court.

If you successfully complete the 12+ months of Veterans Court, are compliant with your treatment, reside in Ventura County and do not pick up additional charges you should be eligible for: waiving of your fines and fees (except victim restitution and outstanding fines and fees from other court cases), expungement of your record and sealing of your record (if requested). In addition your probation may be terminated at the successful completion of Veterans Court.
